Hello, I'm Ian.

Originally from London, England, I have worked as a PHP developer and database engineer for AIG, The British Government (Department for Education) and The Felsted School before moving to Tokyo in 2010 to work as a freelance web developer.

Since 2010 I have been fortunate enough to have worked with a number of individuals, companies and charities who have given me the opportunity to continue to do what I love for a living.

In my free time I like to leave Tokyo and explore other parts of Japan. I have recently started documenting these trips in my blog, in the hope that it may help others looking for travel ideas. When I'm not making websites or on one of these trips, you can usually find me either playing basketball or driving around Tokyo on my Honda Zoomer.

Academic & Professional Background

For work undertaken since moving to Tokyo, please visit my portfolio page. My programming history prior to this is summarised below :

The University of Hertfordshire

Software Engineering MSc

Computer Science BSc Hons

I was fortunate enough to be single recipient of the 'The Clarity Blue' scholorship, the only scholorship available to post graduate computer related degree students at the university.

I was hired on a one year contract to develop an .asp based intranet system for The Lexington Insurance Company, who fall under the AIG umbrella.

The system essentially allowed employees to input data that was currently being entered into several different spreadsheet and other documents, producing identical documentation and certificates.

The system, originally intended for the Lexington’s London based Healthcare Department went on to be utilized by several other departments, by employees in London, Boston, Bermuda and Dublin.

The system was designed using ASP, MSSQL, VBScript and Crystal Report technologies and is still in use today.

The Department for Education

I was contracted via Capgemini to lead the Site Build team of the Schoolsweb project for the DCSF (Department of Children, Schools and Families).

Tasks included technical development (Verity, CSS, XSLTs) on the actual project as well as the development of testing management software. Developing documentation for the software I had created, as well as hosting sessions to guide potential users through it.

Felsted School

Felsted is one of the UK's leading private schools and was established in 1564. I was hired by Felsted in 2009 to develop a new bespoke Management Information System (MIS) that would allow for teaching staff, office staff, pupils and parents to manage and access data related to all aspects of the school's operation. Tasks handled by the Felsted MIS include recording attendance, writing reports, the bullying log, managing medical, event, calendar timetable, trip and detention data.

The system was launched in September 2010 and is still utilized daily by over 970 students, 700 staff members and 1,500 parents.

The MIS has been extremely positively received and was described as 'Outstanding' during a 2011 Ofsted inspection.

I have a local copy of this system that I have been given permission to demonstrate if required.

My background is primarily in database programming and in recent years, almost exclusively in PHP. I am comfortable and have experience of working as part of a team with Zend and Laravel framework and am comfortable with front end web development, keeping up to date with advancements such as bootstrap and angularJs.
